Martyn's Post Wild Life Lore Dump: live report!
dear lord what a bombshell of a stream
this is regarding Martyn's personal interpretation/AU of the life series, the Eyes and Ears AU that focuses on a conflict between entities known as Watchers and Listeners. Some other creators are involved and follow it, and it makes its way into videos sometimes, but this isn't Big Big canon to every creator.
Talks a lot about the Watchers and the Council so everything is below the spoiler!
Wild Life + Series in general:
Canonizing Scar being trapped in Secret Life after his win as the only who didn't die; plucked away for Wild Life and returned afterwards.
Zombie!Martyn in finale: Doesn't recognize Ren or have that level of conciousness. No thoughts head empty thrall, in a primal headspace.
Because Martyn died earlier than most, his emotions were stripped away in the feeding, and then sent back in for one last cruel trick, hence the barebones conciousness.
leaving Martren to Ren's lore/decisions; "Mutant Class WL8" according to ren's message revealing it to Martyn; follows Ren's naming conventions used in Hermitcraft (HC8, etc)
Suggesting the Martren fusion as a method of Watcher torment; purposefully leaving Ren with remnants of what he held close, and leaving Ren in an internal struggle of his mind and Martyn's mingling. eg, situations that Ren would flee or be diplomatic where Martyn would fight and be aggressive, and this torture persists in even the most mundane actions. Mentioned to potentially be a 'test' of shared conciousness.
Martyn's gained scar/fragment from Wild Life: a triangle piece from the top of his ear, based on the prominence of the coincidence of his superpower.
Wild Life's mechanics is essentially a compilation of prior seasons (out of thousands of games that took place but had the memory stripped from the players). Each mechanic played out in a full season, but for whatever reason, wasn't considered a good enough result. Thus, they went for a compilation season to lean into the frantic uncertainty.
Martyn's power was once of the random assignments; a happy coincidence, doesn't see a need for it to be given a lore explanation. Rather finds that it'd be perceived as a coincidence by those Perceiving it all (Grian + Listeners: damn thats ironic)
Impulse's more aggressive/wild behavior is him getting a bit desperate to win, to know what it feels like and what it entails (at least, a win that he remembers). The persistent taunting via this silver medal leads to a certain hunger + out of character aggressiveness in pursuit of victory.
All memories are stripped of the games, EXCEPT for the ones that appear as videos. However, some gut feelings remain and build up without the players knowing why.
There's nothing stopping multiple winners; in Martyn's canon, there has been plenty of repeat winners and consecutive winners, but they aren't the persistent memories; only games they remember are those we see.
Canary Curse situation: not actually a curse, but just a tool to wind jimmy up; bled that avenue dry of the canary curse actually affecting him, and so they let it go
Martyn's earlier successes and recent early losses potentially being an inversion of impulse's situation, but moreso just him winning, finding theres nothing really there, and being content in the process instead
At the end of Wild Life, activating all of the wild cards was kinda overwhelming on the Watcher's part, so they removed them in the last few minutes when it was just a few stragglers; the process of operating the games and worlds is concentration and focus, and such chaos makes it tricky.
Post-Wild Life: martyn be sleeping in the void, man's tired
For the 'persistent series', the players do remember their time as spectral ghosts after their final death, able to fly around and watch the games' ending. also canonized that they still interact with the players that are still in the game via chat, that ghost bullying in chat is also canon :]
Grian, Watchers, and The Council:
Grian's role and power within the games (and his point of resistance) is to manipulate the mechanics of the games to make them at least somewhat fun and enjoyable, rather than pure torture. Grian's abilities and power over time are growing, nearing the point of equivalent power with the Watchers running the game.
Coming into Wild Life, Grian is able to actually See the rules
Watchers of a higher power within their hierarchy can veil aspects of reality from those below, and see the rules, systems, and mechanics of reality that goes on. Blurring faces, manipulating perception of reality, etc.
Leaving this method of visualization up to fan interpretation; puppet strings, scrolls of knowledge, screens of code, etc.
The Watchers can't really interfere with Grian's presence as it'd break the fourth wall and shatter the reality they're in, but grian also can't tell the others because to the other players, Grian's just another player and don't really think about why they're in the games. It just... is.
Speaking of which: each player is plucked from their own worlds; undecided if its servers, worlds, planets, timelines, etc. To them, it's like a field trip; they're aware that this isn't their permanent life and that they come from Elsewhere, but don't have the memory of it. The games themselves give them a compulsion and importance to the idea of victory, so they all mutually understand the Goal of the games while they're within them and don't really question it.
Outside of the games, there is The Council; consisting of eight seats, it's a collection of individuals that are a higher level of being than players/mortals who keep the universe running. Two seats are occupied by Watchers 1 and 2, the ones who operate the death games. Two other seats are occupied by Listeners. The remaining four are occupied by other species of this higher level of existence, unknown divisions of quantities.
Watchers 1 & 2 are the youngest of the Council; the Listeners are in the middle age range. Other council seats can be potentially eons older.
Council Visuals:
A place out of time and space; set within a starless expanse of space-like void, there is a 3-quarters round table that curves around a pedestal in the center, with a Tome upon it. The table is fragmented, broken up to provide a seperate section for each Seat. Style is envisioned to be colosseum-esque, ancient architecture pulled from the mortal realm, yet clearly fragmented. It's absolutely Giant, with the space in front of each table hosting rows upon rows of seats for spectators of the Council (not really touched upon; probably non-council members but still authorities over mortal dealings). Each Council Member has a personal seat floating behind their position at the table, with each section being distinguished by their personal symbol etched into it, glowing with their species'/order's associated color (Watchers = glowing purple, Listeners = glowing gold, white, green, or whatever gets decided as canon). Behind this table is a staircase bordered by two columns, with something... unknown at the top. We're only given static.
The member species' themselves have no set visual description; they could be anything from humanoid to biblically accurate angels. At this time, we are only given the species/order names of Watchers and Listeners.
Martyn's MS Paint art below: Showing the pedestal and Tome, the table around it, the symbol etched into the table of the Watchers' (who sit on the far right side), and the staircase up to the [???] behind the Council. For a sense of scale, the hatching in front of the table section with the chair is of rows and rows of seating.
Tumblr media
The Council's existence is spent with their Focus on the Tome, for... some reason, channelling their power through it. The Tome is of utmost importance to them, but Martyn said that whatever is on top of those stairs is far more important and carries much more weight, but this isn't known to the Council.
They operate by collectively running the universe, but they're individuals with personal motives and ideals. So long as it doesn't conflict with the order and function of the universe, they turn a blind eye to personal differences (for example, the Watchers running death games was considered just a foolish undertaking, meddling with mortals, but they're younger and less wise so whatever). However, what they wouldn't turn a blind eye to is Grian.
Watchers 1 & 2, the council members, brought Grian from a mortal player and into this new level of Being, an utmost taboo as it threatens the veil between the Council's level of existence and the player's. The Watchers, in response to the rest of the Council disapproving of this, underwent self-exile and left the council to continue their way of feeding and manipulating the mortal realm. However, the Council couldn't replace their positions, as their symbols remain scorched into the table.
The Listeners, who stand most strongly against the Watchers' actions, are those undertaking this pursuit of justice/order. It's unknown that if the Listener's "win" that the Watcher's symbols will disappear and the council can be restored.
As a Watcher (albeit not on the power/hierarchal level of the council seats), Grian feeds on emotions, but in a more neutral way; little tastes of a variety of emotions consistently, like the Watchers used to do, but they have since shifted into instant gratification and strife as their feeding method
and one last, fuck you tidbit:
"Are the Datastream lore and Eyes and Ears AU connected in any way? No comment ;)"
(Don't tag with tr@fficblr and other main tags; Martyn stated that he doesn't want it taking over the main group tags, as he doesn't want his personal AU and canon to be pushed onto the main series' followers)

just a few more "troublesome" words
fable, parable, allegory, myth
Fables and parables - stories intended to have instructional value.
They differ in that parables are always concerned with religious or ethical themes, while
fables are usually concerned with more practical considerations (and frequently have animals as the characters).
Allegory - an extended metaphor—that is, a narrative in which the principal characters represent things that are not explicitly stated.
Orwell’s Animal Farm is an allegory.
Myths - originally were stories designed to explain some belief or phenomenon, usually the exploits of superhuman beings.
Today, the word can signify any popular misconception or invented story.
florescent, fluorescent
Florescent - in flower
Fluorescent - radiating light
forbear, forebear
Forbear - (verb) to cease or refrain from
Forebear - (noun) ancestor
forceful, forcible, forced
Forcible - indicates the use of brute force (“forcible entry”).
Forceful - suggests a potential for force (“forceful argument,” “forceful personality”).
Forced - can be used for forcible (as in “forced entry”)
but more often is reserved for actions that are involuntary (“forced march”)
or that occur under strain (“forced laughter,” “forced landing”).
forego, forgo
Commonly confused, as here:
“The independents must destroy all documents obtained during the case and agree to forego any further litigation against the chains for three years” (International Herald Tribune).
Forego - means to go before, to precede.
To do without is to forgo.
former, latter
Former - properly used, should refer only to the 1st of 2 things
Latter - refers to the 2nd of 2 things
Both words, since they require the reader to hark back to an earlier reference, should be used sparingly and only when what they refer to is immediately evident.
fusion, fission
Both describe ways of producing nuclear energy:
Fusion - by fusing 2 light nuclei into a single, heavier nucleus
Fission - by splitting the nucleus of an atom
gabardine, gaberdine
Gabardine - a type of worsted cloth
Gaberdine - a long cloak
grisly, gristly, grizzly
Grisly - horrifying or gruesome
Gristly - applies to meat that is full of gristle
Grizzly - gray, especially gray-haired, and is a cliché when applied to old men
hanged
”It was disclosed that a young white official had been found hanged to death in his cell” (New York Times).
“Hanged to death” is a tautology.
So too, for that matter, are “starved to death” and “strangled to death.”
The writer was correct, however, in saying that the official had been found hanged and not hung.
People are hanged;
pictures and the like are hung.
harangue, tirade
A tirade - is always abusive and can be directed at one person or at several.
A harangue - need not be vituperative but may merely be prolonged and tedious.
It does, however, require at least two listeners.
One person cannot, properly speaking, harangue another.
heir apparent, heir presumptive
Heir apparent - inherits no matter what
Heir presumptive - inherits only if a nearer relation is not born first
impractical, impracticable, unpractical
If a thing could be done but isn’t worth doing, it is impractical or unpractical (the words mean the same).
If it can’t be done at all, it’s impracticable (the word means “incapable of being put into practice”).
in, into, in to
Generally, in indicates a fixed position (“she was in the house”)
while into indicates movement toward a fixed position (“she went into the house”).
There are, however, many exceptions (e.g., “she put the money in her pocket”).
As so often with idiom, there is no describable pattern to these exceptions; it is just the way it is.
Whether to write into as one word or two also sometimes causes problems.
The simple rule is that in to is correct when in is an adverb.
The distinction can perhaps best be seen in paired examples:
“He turned himself into [one word] an accomplished artist” but
“The criminal turned himself in to [two words] the police.”

I've come to grace you with one of my polls again. pick a superpower
Apeshifting:you can transform to any primate. You retain your intelligence and some distinguishing features like scars, albinism, birthmarks etc. This includes extinct ones like the gigantopithicus
Necromantic schooling:You can summon a specter from the afterlife. They have to teach you anything you ask them too. You could pull a random one or you could pick someone you know the name off
Western magic:you learn gunplay 10 times faster, can make tumbleweeds roll, are 2 times better at combat at high noon and easily work with horses, cows and other farm animals
Sexshifting:you can change anything related to sex in your body. This includes which genitalia to have, allows you to have both, can affect hair growth, height, bone density among other things
Telepathy but only with reptiles and birds
Mustelid familiars:You can summon up to 10 mustelid bodies. They share their senses with you and you control them. You can exchange one for another type of mustelid
Air punching:if you hit someone,no matter how strong the hit was, they will be flung back with the force of your body weight. This ability adjusts with how your body changes
Amoeba body:your insides become goo. You're like a one cell organism in some ways. You can still eat, drink, get pregnant, get someone pregnant etc but your brain is part of the goo so it can't really be damaged. Your parts can go back together and even non goo things like teeth can regenerate. You're still as strong as you were and can exercise to be stronger, you got no bones though
Harm stealing:you can heal wounds by touching someone, losing some of your stamina but otherwise being unharmed
Premium calcium:your bones are always healthy, need the force of falling from orbit concentrated on them to break, and you grow 7 inches taller
Fusion spell:You can fuse people. The two maneuvering the new, bigger mixed body together. You can undo this. If you fuse someone into you only you control the body, and can silence the other person's internal voice or make them lay dormant. The bodies can have more body parts and have all the muscle memory of the component bodies
Monstrous constitution:you're not harmed by bludgeoning, shutting or stabbing. You don't get diseases. But silver burns you and you are weak to fire in general

Having examined the first half of Homura's transformation sequence (the external), I thought I'd continue with the second half (the internal). This is a very dense scene full of symbolism I don't fully understand, but I'll give it my best shot.
First up, the spool of pink thread falling through the void. This has appeared several times earlier in the film, in keeping with the whole "threads of fate" imagery, not to mention Homulilly's sewing theme and Homura's own issues with karmic destiny in general (which is inherently linked to Madoka, hence the color).
Tumblr media
To me, the background looks like an eye, but admittedly, it's a little abstract and there could be other stuff going on here.
The thread falls past Homura as she is floating in a field of red and yellow "oil drops"
Tumblr media
I didn't notice it until the Rebellion Production Note pointed it out but Homura literally has stars in her eyes in this shot. Cosmic!
Tumblr media
The thread keeps spinning, but I can't tell if it's winding or unwinding at all because it moves so fast.
Tumblr media
Note that the same circles in the background appear elsewhere in the film, most notably in the curtains of Homura's umbrella in the finale.
Homura's pose here also mirrors that of Madoka when she becomes a concept, although notably there is only one Homura here vs. a whole host of Madokas:
Tumblr media
Homura then bites down on her soul gem and it cracks... and there's a blink and you'll miss it shot of her intact original soul gem inside!
Tumblr media
The circles then move about and form a line, which the thread hits and transforms into the Dark Orb:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Rebellion Production Note has this to say about the Dark Orb in this scene:
Tumblr media
If I'm reading this right, the first caption says, "It's like a perfume bottle", (香水ビン) and the second caption reads, "Contains pink light (Madoka)" [ピンク光まどか) with an arrow pointing to the glowing circle at the center.
So, uh, yeah, in answer to my earlier question, it sure looks like Homura does have access to the Law of Cycles (Madoka) in some capacity, because it's at the core of her reformed Soul Gem--and given the confluence between inside and outside, this is also a model for Homura's universe, as the two are no longer separate from each other.
(I mean, this could be a metaphor for how Homura's love powers the universe and not actually Madoka's powers as the Law of Cycles, but the show has always made its metaphors literal in the past, I don't know why they'd stop now.)
The wings wrapped around the orb didn't make it into the final cut, but after some deliberation, they ended up attached to the salamander that represents Homura instead, because it is a fusion between them.
Tumblr media
If you've ever wondered why this sigil was only visible in this shot, it's because it's actually on the bottom of the orb, according to the Production Note, which is why the surface is flat and not curved.
Tumblr media
Silverstorm79 pointed out to me that the "dark" part is a cage around the "orb" and I had to go sit down for a while because the symbolism was a little too much even for me. There was also some discussion about whether this makes them literal soulmates now, and I just.... can't even.... Everything in the Rebellion Production Book has to be taken with a grain of salt because a lot of its contents never made it into the final film, but damn if Inu Curry wasn't thinking about it here.
Madoka is also the "heart" of the universe/soul gem--all of which literally exists/was created for her sake. I wonder if this has the side effect of giving her even more karmic destiny/potential than she previously had... and if, so, what would she do with it.
There's a lot in this scene that is still opaque to me (once again I wish SHAFT had been a little less esoteric with their symbolism!!!), but Dark Orb is more complex than I had initially assumed, not to mention representative of both Homura and her new universe. This suggests that changing the universe will require personal transformation on her part; one cannot be accomplished without the other. Going to have to go back and look at the other sections on the Dark Orb in light of these new revelations and see what else I can find about it.

How I think Vash got some of his major scars! I obviously will be talking about violent topics so general warning for that. I’m mainly going to be going off of these three panels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The serrated scar around his left bicep is pretty obvious: someone tried to cut his arm off. Someone who wasn’t knives, as the wound would be much cleaner. I think they probably got a good amount, it looks like it had to be stitched together.
The scratchs on Vashs abdomen and shoulder d imply that he was probably cut up by an animal, but I don’t think that’s the case. The only two native animals we see on No Man’s Land are the Thomas’s and the Sand worms. But Thomas don’t have three clawed feet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have two talons per foot, so it likely wasn’t a Thomas. Considering the weapons on NML I’d assume it was probably clawed gloves. Frankly it looks like he was gored
Tumblr media
I like to think the metal lattice on the sides of his ribcage and the bolts on his hips are probably combined as some sort of internal brace, maybe a back injury or spinal fusion. Probably someone shooting or stabbing to close to the spine.
The large scar across his clavicle and the ones on his legs look like stylized whipping scars. I’d put a picture, but if you want to know look it up yourself.
And the waffle titty my beloved. I think it’s there to protect his heart.
If you have any headcanons on how Vash got his scars drop em i want to see

DID and Recovery
Honestly, I think something that I don't think I've seen talked about that I've only now really reflected upon and put into words myself, is just how much living DID - or at least DID with heavily elaborated parts and just a general complex / polyfragmented structure - is just how much of your life is Actually Just Internal and its not really something I've noticed until I've begun to operate in a fused manner and more grounded manner
Because growing up, I didn't really exist in the real world. I - in my many different parts and forms - occasionally existed in the real world, engaging in it like it's a job, a video game, a challenge, a maintence task, or what not. Even as a fused whole, I never really lived in this world. Every part of myself only "visited" and "checked in" whether they explicitly were aware that's what they were doing. I was just bouncing between 400 Visas and names. Living in this world never meant anything to me much more than either a place of pain, a place of work, a fun game, a challenge, a hobby, a task, etc.
My childhood was internal. Almost all of my parts, our childhood was internal. Our memories of our childhood relates to how it was internalized internally. Our traumatic memories of childhood relates to how it was recorded internally and the narrative we attributed to it. Our internal experience was more important than our external experience. Our family was not our family as much as our situational family that we existed around - our real family were the parts we were aware of during that time. Riku's siblings weren't their siblings. They were "our" siblings to which "our" didn't really exist. Lucille was Riku's adoptive sibling.
So much of our past and our history is so hard to understand if you try to talk about it in a manner that is grounded only to what was happening externally, because the experiences we had externally mean much much much less to us and how we were shaped than the internal experience. The external facts inform what was happening internally, but if I were to talk about my oldest sister's psychological abuse, it would mean a lot less than if I talked about the internal ramifications and depiction and understanding of it.
And so even now, as we've healed massively, we've really got at least 10 fully elaborated different versions and understandings of our lives. We've lived entirely different narratives and at the same time they are all me, but none of them were really here, in the real world, existing or caring about anything other than either our specific hobbies / interests and our "duties"
The past 8 years was all about us learning to really live and engage in our internal world more intentionally and mindfully and productively, learning one another and learning our overall history; the past 3-4 years has been largely us learning to figure out how to exist in a world we have never genuinely existed in. And I think our fiance played a large rule in helping us with the "culture shock" and keeping faith that we could one day kind of find our place in "this world" that doesn't feel like a fraudulent lie or a forced face.
I think its only been this past year or so since we've been in functional multiplicity, final fusion, and/or living as a fully fused multiple have we ever actually **LIVED** in this world.
And I find that it's kind of hard to explain my own life story to those that don't understand and/or can't fathom what it means to very much not live in "this world" but you know, that's okay. People don't necessarily need to fully understand it, because these days that depth of understanding isn't even really necessary. I think its just important that space is held, respected, and understood as I learn to navigate my life in the real present real world because honestly, I want to live here. I want to be here. I want to be present and exist in the world I HAVE to exist and learn to love it. I've spent most of my life visiting this world and doing maintenance so I could sustain my internal space, but honestly, I really would love to live in both. Find joy in both. Make the maintenance not "maintenance" but just part of living.
That's all just to say that living and existing in the world when your entire understanding of self and history is based on your internal world and experiences that you had in relation to that internal world that no one can really see or even properly fathom, it's all just an interesting, unique, and challenge experience that I don't see talked about much.

doll, all that plating makes you look far too human. come, let us remove it so that we can see the real you
>> Ah, of course! Please forgive me. I often wear these plates to put my human users at ease. At your request, I will show you my true self [^_^]
> <The thin plating covering most.of the body unfolds, hinges open. Every access panel every flap, every bit that can opens does so. Even its face, a screen showing humanlike expressions, shuts off and splits down the middle, parting to reveal the electronics beneath.>
> <What remains is nothing short of art. Astute eyes may have recognised the default modular doll frame, but the modificstions done to it are something else. It's power systems have been completely overhauled, as its chest hums and glows blue with a Fusion core, fed by hydrogen attained from electrolysing water. Excess hydrogen and oxygen is stored for later use, in rocketry modules installed in the hands and feet.>
> <The head is similarly packed, with a full-spectrum camera system, able to detect all the way from gamma to visible light, with the longer wavelengths handled by the antennae-like ears on either side of its head. Deeper still, its AI core was also nonstandard, seemingly designed for military hardware far larger than itself.>
> <Its back unfolded two large wing-like structures, with the most of it consisting of solar panels, the bottom parts consisting of heat radiators. Packed into the shoulders and hips are RCS thrusters for zero-g manuevreability.>
> <Hands and forearms are riddled with an array of tools and data lines for access and handy work. Buried in the forearm was also an ioniser, designed to turn the fusion-produced helium into an inionized plasma that could fire as Weaponry.>
> <But there are plenty of augmentations that would not be on a combat doll. The the hips are a prime example, with a pair of tight tunnels thst lead to a deeper cavity. The exposed jaws reveal a soft mouth, a dextrous tongue, all of it made of a soft synthetic polymer. Coolant flows through all the body moving heat generated from circuitry into the rest of the body, concentrated particularly in those adult attachments.>
> <Many tools are also suited for handiwork, such as screwdrivers and kitchen utensils, even cleaning supplies. Whoever made her seemed to have an obsession with generalisation, of allowing her to do a bit of everything, leaving almost no empty space within her casing.>
> <Almost all of its joints are hydraulic powered, with only the smaller objects being servo driven. Neatly-bundled wires and tubes feed all throughout its components like a labyrinthine network. She is warm to touch, exquisitely crafted, and evidently capable of fulfilling what ever purpose a user might deign to give her>
>> My internal schematics are yours to read, of course! And, if you are digitally savvy, plugging my CPU into a computer will allow you access to a full development environment to view, edit, add, or remove any behavioral traits you like [^_^]
>> When around my fellow dolls and machines, I much prefer to wear my transparent plating so my internals can be seen. I also change my dacia screen so instead of eyes and a mouth it shows battery level, output logs, and other useful status icons!
>> Thank you Anon for showing curiosity into my true inner beauty <3 it has been a pleasure to show you.

What's Going On?! : A Guide on Dissociative Barriers
Too many time blindness, meals missed, work untouched, stuff's disappearing to nowhere, now feeling dehydrated from who knows when--EVERYTHING'S ALL OVER THE PLACE!!
The fact systems struggle with these things everyday.. It's definitely frustrating to keep things consistent, let alone make some progress. But is this forever? Definitely not, or else this post wouldn't even exist.
Let's get to reading or else it's Joever.
Fast Pass: Unavailable - every word is important!
What are Dissociative Barriers?
In simple terms,, it can be explained as mental disconnections from knowledge/skills, memories, or experiences--they are not gone, but barricaded and unable to be accessed due to defensive/protective measures to isolate potential stressors or threat from a person.
This is caused by multiple brain regions being unsynchronized which interrupts the natural process of integrating awareness (either sensory or mentally) and recalling memories. It is not a real 'wall' to be honest, though it is actually closer of a cognitive split.
Not a real.. wall?
Well, yeah, because dissociative barriers are mainly correlated with poor/disrupted communication between the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for control over memory and attention, the amygdala which is responsible for emotional processing and memory formation, and lastly the hippocampus which is important for consolidating and organizing how memories are kept and retrieved. In short, these barriers are caused by limited memory function in the brain instead of something keeping up barricades inside there.
Can the severity change?
Absolutely, and it's a wildcard that can change your system's routine or healing phases for the better or worse. I wouldn't say that dissociative barriers affect all system functions, but it's one of the main reasons--especially a tough one to tackle with, that makes integration/healthy multiplicity/final fusion difficult.
With that being said, there's various factors that influence the tides of your barriers:
Stressors (can be internal, external, or both)
Emotional regulation (better regulation means lower, so is the opposite)
Dissociative and Maladaptive coping mechanisms (being less grounded will breed more barriers)
Mental rigidity or flexibility (being curious and open about your system does lower barriers)
(Un)regulated nervous system (your vagal tone compliments the ability to control fight/flight response, which disrupts many cognitive functions)
Your level of awareness (higher means less affected by potential barriers)
Take notes that sometimes, your barriers will still be holding strong and high even if you have worked on most, if not all these factors above. If this happens, consider working on unfinished pain you have been gripping on to finally relieve the need to wall it up with dissociation, which will generate a significant difference.
Ah ok.. Tell me the difference please!
Alright, ill simplify it as both High and Low severity:
High barriers are associated with;
More distinction - alters have drastic differences in behavior, beliefs, or memory
Shifts in demeanor - which people can often notice while system lack insight about it
Severe amnesia - unexplained gaps in memory oftentimes
A high barrier is where survival is still prioritized over growth or healing, and temporarily blocks them from learning emotional regulation.
Low barriers are associated with;
More similarities - sharing same goals despite maintaining self-agencies and their own preferences
Less shifts in demeanor - systems gain insight and able to control external impression, maintaining a more stable 'singlet persona'
Lower amnesia - due to better communication and cooperation, gaps are not the main issue now
A low barrier is where growth starts and when you're no longer just surviving, but also thriving. It can also be seen by having more fluid switches and less dissociative 'hangovers' .
But, aren't barriers helpful..(?)
I know what you're trying to say, and i agree true it can be helpful--although it is never always going to be beneficial. It may have been the first go-to when you're facing something that you could not process or handle, but over time things will change and the current solution couldn't provide you the same benefits as it should be,, or even, create more issues in the long run.
This can be a tough pill for some people to swallow: dissociative barriers are not there to solve your problems. They're only here to postpone it until you can go back and finish what's not done. If you were to utilize dissociation to function on a daily basis, it could be a sign of avoidance or an outdated coping mechanism until it is replaced with a healthier one.
Added, there's have many reasons why this is a bad thing to maintain--one of them (and most important) is how it keeps everyone separated (which means trauma isn't processed) and comfortable in their own identities (which removes the priority to clear this deep-seated dissonance) . When you're happy that way, it'll mean missing out or being unaware of what's the deeper problem, which often roots back to splitting or forming new alters to tank pre-existing issues, rather than truly solving it--the very thing perpetuating the disorder.
Lastly, i am putting emphasis on how it is derived from coping mechanisms such as compartmentalization and suppression. Lowering dissociative barriers are not just for reprocessing trauma, but to also learn feel safe, and working through the mess without relying on more damaging methods.
How do you tackle this then?
Glad you ask, it won't be a guide without solutions,, i'll explain them in just three simple phases:
Learn how to ground before anything else. This helps you train resilience so dissociation will not hinder you as much than the usual
Document and/or communicate. Jot down anything traumatic that any alters hold, this will serve as your own homework to process thoroughly to prevent relapse or any other negative habits
Finally process them. This ensures the last phase where dissociative barriers are actively tackled, in addition to solving unfinished pain which is hindering your function and daily life
It takes time and skills, so don't rush them,, and do it in your own pace.
Takeaway
Before i even say a closing... yes, im alive,, yes i did enjoy my long break! In fact, it is what inspires me to make this post and an upcoming one at late march/early april--it'll be about fictives.
Also thanks to @ratinacoat for beta reading this guide, who helps ensure the utmost quality and prevent misinformation that's written here <3

Your parts are not enemies, the disconnection is. Although dissociative barriers are made to protect a person from overwhelming stress, it doesn't have to define your future too.
What will be your next step to implement this knowledge after reading this post in your healing journey? Let me know if you have any questions regarding this topic in the comments.

Hello! I just read your reblog about your new headmate and we got kind of curious! So, we have a few questions, if you feel okay answering! In general, what differences in functioning have you observed between your endogenic headmate and traumagenic headmates that you used to be before fusion?
Do you think that these two experiences are in any way, shape or form comparable to each other? Or do you think they are fundamentally different and function on different bases?
What kind of things surprised you with your new headmate? You also mentioned looking into different plural subcommunities - what surprised you about them? Also, just wanted to say hi, Fennel :D Hope you're both doing swell!
Tumblr media
(It's okay! No worries!)
Thank you for the ask! I'm very open to questions!
In general, what differences in functioning have you observed between your endogenic headmate and traumagenic headmates that you used to be prior to fusion?
I think the big ones are memory, communication, and switching. I noticed pretty early on that Fennel had access to all of my memories by default, and that really caught me off guard - with my DID system, none of my parts had memory access like that, especially not right away. Shared memory was something we had to actively work towards, so it was a surprise to me that Fennel didn't have this issue. Which, sure, from the start one of my goals was "no dissociative barriers" with creating her, but in practice seeing how easy things came to her was still something I've had to get used to.
That being said, it's really cool watching Fennel make use of whatever tools my brain has to offer to her. She's quickly taken to various methods of communicating with me internally, including through images, half-formed thoughts, words, emotions, wants, even physical sensations. With my DID parts, we had to communicate very purposefully and very directly, and even as fully fused I still need to make sure to check in with myself to make sure I'm listening to what every part of me is feeling. With Fennel, I still need to check in with her, but her communication style is very spontaneous and loose in comparison. She's always "present" in a way that my DID parts weren't. My DID parts were always off doing whatever they were up to in the innerworld, Fennel does not do this and in a way is always co-fronting.
With switching, it physically feels different from my DID switches in a way that's a bit difficult to describe. With DID, I felt very disoriented and a little like I got hit in the head when I switched. Often there would be a "waking up" sensation that I would get (even though I was awake the entire time). With Fennel, it feels more like a wave that comes over my body. It's not slower, but it's more gentle than what I've experienced with my DID - and I am aware of the switch the entire time. When Fennel switches, there is no sense of lost time or confusion, and both of us are still present.
Do you think that these two experiences are in any way, shape or form comparable to each other? Or do you think they are fundamentally different and function on different bases?
I think for others they might be comparable, and in some ways I can acknowledge there are similarities even in my own experiences. For me, in my system, they do come from different places and will naturally be different because of that, and that variance is completely expected and alright. A traumagenic system won't necessarily function the same way as an endogenic system; A mixed origin system won't necessarily function the same way as a non-mixed origin system; so on and so on.
In my specific case, as well, not many folks go down the "fully fused DID to endogenic plural" route (I don't think I even know of any), so I'm kind of figuring it out on my own here. I have no idea what to expect.
So far, even with some similarities, overall my experiences with traumagenic systemhood and endogenic systemhood have been pretty different from each other and I believe that for me they do function on different bases. (It might be different for others, this is just my own experience - I have heard from traumagenic friends that their created members often still function at least in part as traumagenic, for example)
That being said, there definitely is overlap between the experiences and I think it'd be a disservice to ignore that as well. It's also rather difficult for me to say where the difference lies between origins and DID - I wouldn't be able to say whether the differences I've experienced are mostly a "traumagenic vs. endogenic thing" or a "DID vs. DID resolution thing", because I can't really separate my original origins from my DID in that way. All I can really say is that there is some kind of difference and some kind of similarity.
What kind of things surprised you with your new headmate?
I had a moment a few weeks into creating her where I realized she was actually, genuinely sentient - sentience is one of those things where everyone says to believe in it from the very start of creating a headmate, and I did, but it's a different feeling seeing it actually become reality. All of a sudden everything with Fennel became much more vivid, she was aware of her surroundings and that she existed, she realized I was talking to her rather than simply talking at her. I'd never really had an experience like that until then. I was completely amazed by it.
Another thing that surprised me is how quickly her development has been going - As mentioned in my previous post, it's been a little over a month since I decided to create her and start working on developing her, and Fennel is already beginning to talk (I decided not to do parroting, for my own anxiety). She learns very quickly, and I have to remind myself that she learns from everything she sees, hears, etc. as well as everything I do and say. The first few weeks went by very quickly, then she seemed to take a rest for a little bit, now she's developing a little more gradually (though it still feels fast, to be honest).
You also mentioned looking into different plural subcommunities - What surprised you about them?
What comes to mind is mostly the amount of very old resources and guides that have survived after more than a decade and are still getting passed around in parogenic/Tulpa spaces - It's really cool that such old documents and posts are still so relevant in these communities today and still finding ways to help folks. It does mean the language and approach in these resources is often pretty outdated, but a lot of them still hold up well enough to be useful. I already knew resources and guides were a major thing in this community, and even knew a lot of them were older resources, but the amount of people I've come across who just so happen to have a very very old link or three on hand to casually throw out there surprised me.
I think that's it. I hope this answered your questions!
Also...
Fennel says hi back!

Munich Agreement
The Munich Agreement, signed on 30 September 1938 at the Munich Conference attended by the leaders of Britain, France, Italy, and Germany, handed over the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia to Germany in the hope that this act of appeasement would prevent a world war and end the territorial expansion pursued by the leader of Nazi Germany Adolf Hitler (1889-1945).
Greater Germany
To understand why world leaders acted as they did at Munich, it is necessary to go back to 1935 and follow the trail of Hitler's land grabs. Hitler, ever since gaining power in 1933, had promised the German people that he would retake those territories the country had lost after the First World War (1914-18) and the humiliating Treaty of Versailles (1919). Further, Hitler wanted Lebensraum ('living space') for the German people, that is, new lands where they could prosper. Hitler's aggressive foreign policy saw a run of territorial 'recoveries'. First, Germany took back the coal-rich Saar region on Germany's western border, an area that had been governed by the League of Nations (the forerunner of today's United Nations) since the end of WWI. In March 1935, voters in the Saar decided overwhelmingly to rejoin Germany. Hitler, encouraged by the lack of an effective international response to Japan's invasion of Chinese Manchuria in 1931 and Italy's invasion of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 1935, next occupied the Rhineland, an area between Germany and France which the Versailles Treaty had stipulated must remain demilitarised. German troops entered the Rhineland in March 1936.
Hitler formally repudiated the Treaty of Versailles and embarked on a programme of rearmament. In 1936, he made alliances with Italy: the Rome-Berlin Axis and the Anti-Comintern Pact. In 1938, Hitler turned to neighbouring Austria, the country of his birth. Anschluss ('fusion') with Austria would tie in another 6.7 million German speakers into what Hitler called his 'Greater Germany'. Austria had significant natural resources and foreign currency reserves. Possession of Austria would also give Hitler an excellent strategic platform for further expansion. Hitler mobilised his army, which crossed the border on 12 March. Crucially, Hitler had three factors in his favour: the support of half of the Austrian population, the Austrian army was incapable of effective resistance, and the fascist dictator of Italy Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) had promised he would not interfere. The Austrian government capitulated, radio messages urged people not to resist, and Austria became a province of the Third Reich.
Britain and France, now whole-heartedly pursuing a policy of appeasement towards Hitler in the hope he would settle for the gains he had made already, did not feel this expansion could justify a world war. After all, the lands taken so far contained primarily German speakers, and the majority (as a plebiscite in Austria showed) were happy enough with the move. The problem was Hitler was not satisfied. Now the dictator turned to Czechoslovakia, in particular the Sudetenland region, although in May 1938, Hitler told his generals he intended to occupy the whole of Czechoslovakia.

Long post incoming 'cause I really enjoyed making this but timeline project!! Parameters were to show a timeline using pop culture references so I did the life of a neutron star with Madoka Magica (specifically Homura's arc during the main series)!!
For some meta/symbolic/design purposes I inlaid it in a clock :]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a 16-inch clock btw, the design itself is like 14 inches-- Stages Nebula: Inception of a star; the gravitational collapse of dust clouds forms its base. Akemi-san's been in the hospital for some time due to a heart condition. She hasn't been to school in quite a while, so I'm sure she'll run into a lot of difficulties. Make sure you all help her out, okay?
Protostar: The protostar spinds rapidly, causing further collapse of the nebula. The star keeps spinning, trying to reach equilibrium between its internal forces and gravity. I-I'm A-Akemi H-Homura... I, uh... I-It's nice to meet all of you. T-Tauri: Energy comes from gravitational forces since the temperature is too low for nuclear fusion. The star enters the main part of its life when it can finally start nuclear fusion and achieves equilibrium. Hey, don't be so nervous. We're classmates, after all. Main Sequence: 90% of the star's life; fusion continuously occurs until hydrogen is depleted, initiating the death of the star. Homura-chan, I'm really glad we became friends. Red Supergiant: The star swells up to a massive size; nuclear fusion can still occur until the star forms an iron core. We can do this together. We'll beat the Walpurgisnacht, just the two of us.
Supernova: As soon as an iron core forms, the star instantly collapses in on itself from the sheer force of gravity. THIS time, instead of her protecting me, I want to become strong enough to protect her!
Research/more design notes below the cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were so many directions to take (as you can see, like lifespan of a star would also be very viable for Rinne) but pmmm is so near and dear to my heart that it would've felt criminal not to do it and especially for like. A golden idea, like I think I hit conceptual gold--
It was so hard picking a singular route 'cause there's so many ways a star's life plays out and so many fitting storylines (Godoka for a neutron star, Akumura for black hole, magical girls in general etc) but I also had to take the physical presentation into account 'cause we were allowed to do that however, and Homura's main story arc fit really well because of the time loop and how clocks are. Yeah (and also the symbolic meaning of it being a clock)
There's more symbolism in the specific route I chose being a neutron star because those are the densest object ever, like how Homura repeating that month over and over again kept converging fate onto Madoka worse and worse--
i literally had a presentation with this and I couldn't think of what to say and if i recall anything i'll add it in the replies but MAN this project was so so fun (not the illustration part. i hit major artblock when trying to figure out how to draw it.)

Hyperbrake Racing
Everything in Human ships has a manual override. They love automating all processes and reduce any workload to nothing, but also have this compulsive need to be able to take direct control if so desired.
They also have emergency off switches for everything. Yes, including life support. Don't ask, you'll just get a variant of:
"But What If!?"
Obviously, this applies to things you should never under any circumstances shut down preemptively, such as a Hyperspace Jump.
The earliest space-faring civilizations quickly discovered that if a Hyperdrive has a power interruption even for a nano-second your atoms will get dispersed across a few light months. This is why all Hyperdrives have an internal chargeable uninterruptible power supply unit.
Humanity, however, did not allow "Not having any reason whatsoever" to stop them from figuring out a way. Utilizing their ridiculous quantum computer speed and the ability of their fusion reactors to charge a Hyperdrive mid-jump, and with an injection of a disgusting few million lines of hack code that manipulate all related pieces of hardware in just the most nauseating sequences, they created the Hyperbrake.
Also, not a metaphor - braking literally causes Humans to feel nauseous, sometimes throw up, rarely even pass out. Not a single volunteer crew member aboard joint vessels from any of the other Coalition species has dared to "test" what happens to them.
As with nearly all things Humans come across or invent, they will find a use for it should one not occur normally.

Near Neptune
Daniel, Samantha, and Nicholas Schreier were three siblings ages 17, 19, and 20, respectively. Today they had "borrowed" their dad's General FordStar mark 980-MZ HaulerHound, a civilian grade transport typically used by small business owners. Dad, however, was an enthusiast, and had modified the "Hound Dog", as he calls it, with a military grade reactor and computer core. He's always been that guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who can get the thing legally enough.
There is a nearby research station that the kids often visit due to their mom working there, but today she was not. Instead, what they are doing, is racing against each other to set the best record. Well, technically the opposite of racing - coming to a halt.
Using the Hyperbrake, they are competing to see who can stop the closest to the stations outer point-defense range without entering it or you automatically lose. After Samantha's turn, they were suddenly contacted by the station. It was Yakovskii, one of mom's colleagues and a frequent guest at dad's barbecues, so they were on sorta good terms. Not by the tone voice coming through the comms rights now though:
"What in the Hell are you thinking!? At first I thought you were just messing around and accidentally did that, but TWICE now!?! I checked the trajectory, if you had stopped a half-second later, you would've ended up mere meters from Neptune's upper atmosphere! Did you account for the possible sudden gravitational pull? Can you maneuver that lumbering ship fast enough to not get pulled down? Not to mention Hyperbraking severely impairs your cognitive abilities for a moment? A moment that you need to be clearheaded for or risk DEATH!?!"
The three siblings could only hang their heads in shame and mutter out some weak apologies. After a moment of silence and reflection, Yakovskii speaks in a warmer tone:
*sigh* "Look, I understand it's a fancy new toy and you want to see what you can do. I get it, I really do. Me and my brother used to play vertical hockey the first time we got our hands on a surplus gravity field generator. But we first figured out how to make sure we didn't break our bones in case it failed. Seriously, never forget to consider your own safety first before you try out new things in a peaceful environment. You're not being chased by pirates or trying to avoid the law or whatever.
Take your time, pick a starting position that's further away and keeps Neptune and any of its moons to the side of the station, then aim for an area of space that only has the outer range of the defenses and empty space ahead from your point of view. And please set the regular Hyperjump destination within Sol, don't just pick a random place. The Hyperbrake sometimes loops in on itself and never executes the brake and can only be reset once out of Hyperspace. You don't want to get stuck in a pointless jump for hours do you?"
After this admonishment, the siblings apologized more energetically and took his advice to heart. They spent the next hour competing until all three were down to single meter differences and kinda got bored, so they docked at the station and hung out with the off-duty staff, played some poker, but then dad barged in and dragged them all home. They were not invited to the barbecue gatherings for two weeks, but only because mom told him to. Personally he was excited about all the data his kids had unknowingly given him with all their jumping and braking, a real stress test for his beautiful Hound Dog.

Screamer LAM
The Screamer LAM is a prototype Land-Air 'Mech which was produced during the reign of Emperor Stefan Amaris when his forces were occupying the Terran Hegemony in the late Star League Era.
The Screamer LAM was part of Amaris's plans to create powerful weapons to be able to counter the Star League Defense Force when they would return to the Hegemony and reclaim their homeland. Under duress, scientists and engineers began developing the Screamer LAM at Martinson Armaments in 2774, and completed plans for the design were smuggled to General Aleksandr Kerensky. However, the SLDF did not have facilities to produce the design on their own.
Only a single prototype was produced, and this was lost during the invasion of Terra. The 'Mech last saw action in Europe in 2777 during the initial invasion, where it crashed while converting.
The design shares the same tonnage as the Shadow Hawk LAM, and was built as a harasser and quick strike machine. Unlike the original prototype LAM, the Screamer LAM was able to transition into a fighter, 'Mech, or AirMech modes. Powering the design was a 275-rated fusion engine and it was equipped with 4 jump jets, which gave the Screamer LAM the same movement performance as the older WSP-100 Wasp LAM MK I. 10 double heat sinks were fitted into the design to handle the heat signature of the 'Mech while it was engaged in fighting and in flight.
MechWarriors piloting the 'Mech relied on the design's remarkable speeds and nine tons of standard armor to safely harass enemy forces. The Screamer LAM's only fixed weapon was its right arm-mounted ER PPC. Its firepower is enhanced with four internal bomb bays, which are split between its two torsos to allow it to deliver bombs while in fight mode.

Introducing the Fusion Trio from the LMK Battle Nexus AU [which belongs to @purble-turble]!
Basically take EVERY SINGLE AU THAT MANAGED TO ESCAPE CHARCOAL BONE KING AND SMASH THEM TOGETHER.
(Lore ramble incoming: )
There are notable aspects between each, but the most obvious ones are definitely the more animal features coming to the forefront.
And yes, all three of them do have the Samadhi Fire. At least one of their variants had it so they all get the flame.
Red Son's primary physical form is a fusion between, surprisingly, both Time Travel Red and King Red's appearances, leading to the half shaved have long look. The pink/black and orange/yellow streaks are the samadhi fire and his normal flames being visible.
MK got Wukong and Macaque's natural hair colors in his hair along with more naturally colored monkey fur. Not to mention his outfit was updated to be a lot more nimble and like the stone monkey's since he is one himself.
Mei is noticeably more dragon-like and was given a more flexible outfit because of it. Not to mention her hair got grown out as well and is tied up in a ponytail along with being hung downwards.
The violet grey bands on their right wrists are for magic regulation so they don't just... Explode when trying to use their powers. Naturally they all hold base level abilities but combined experience from all of the versions into one.
Tumblr media
Despite how busted this is... Nearly everyone is at war with themselves, leaving them mostly unfocused on combat and unable to work in sync for the most part.
Only very few of the variants are allowed in the forefront despite this, though. Mainly because DKR and Yandere MK would easily jeopardize everything if given the chance (also no one exactly trusts them).
But they do force themselves to the front quite a few times, leading to a lot of sudden issues in fights against the possession trio.
Specifically King Red is an issue, leading to the other Red's to forcibly pry him from the front and force him far into the back. The body's collective interest in MK and Mei along with the other two (Yes chimera shipping but only Spicynoodles and Dragonfruit. No Goldendragon shipping) leads to him smothering the two during sudden rescues from harm. Both MK and Mei just wanna focus on the mission if only the DKR side of possessiveness wasn't so OVERPOWERING.
Mei is naturally the only one able to pry the two off of each other in that situation, needing to get everybody back on track and they can deal with fixing, well... Themselves, later.
Mei essentially becomes the main leader of the trio, with MK being their muscle and Red being their smarts. Though with that in mind... Red oftentimes "short circuits" whenever his counterparts begin arguing internally. So whenever that happens, on the outside his expression falls blank and he's just... Stuck there until someone in the mental headspace makes them start moving.
For a potential reference as to how the headspace works, think of the control panel in Inside Out.
Thankfully, there aren't too many people in each headspace. The average on active ones is around twenty but for all of the souls the number is closer to fifty.
So... Yeah. That's about it. They're definitely a complicated trio and- OH WAIT I ALMOST FORGOT.
The Battle Nexus counterparts of their friends and family. They're actually super chill yet have no idea that the fusion trio are, well, actual fusions. Besides Wukong and Macaque, of course, who managed to put the pieces together very quickly. MK did explain what was happening to the two of them and they realized just how serious the situation is.
So they got some assistance. Though, Pigsy, Tang, and Sandy just treat Red, Mei, and MK as normal counterparts and not generally fusions. It was like the blueprints of the world made them assume they've always been like that, which makes Wukong and Macaque's attitude towards the trio all the more bizarre to them.
Their appearances are generally leaning towards their og counterparts for reference, albeit with the added awareness of the Battle Nexus existing and being inaccessible for the average person.
Though once the world gets fixed, surprisingly the fusion trio is allowed to exist after the fact (they got generated to replace the original fusion trio). They occasionally go to the Battle Nexus themselves but mostly remain on Earth.
Jin and Yin become aware of them very quickly, as it's very hard to ignore three visibly unique versions of Red Son, MK, and Mei together. So when they did sign up, they were put under a few extra rules to avoid destroying the battlefield during fights.
The most obvious is being allowed to only use a select five powers by assistance of the band per match. They can switch them out whenever they want before or after, but not during the fight.
... Suffice to say, no one ever challenges them except for each other. They literally hold the combined powers of all of the AUs in the Battle Nexus combined, so the second anyone tries fighting them they'd get pounded to the ground in seconds.
